Accumulo Offering for Spatio-Temporal Capabilities with OpenGeo Suite

Alexandria, VA October 27, 2013 — Boundless and CCRi announce the launch of a new platform for building geospatial capabilities on the highly distributed Apache Accumulo database. OpenGeo Suite with GeoMesa combines data management and publishing with big data analytics via GeoMesa, a high performance spatio-temporal indexing and querying capability for Accumulo. Boundless and CCRi will provide integrated support and maintenance as well as professional services for the platform.

By implementing OGC and GeoTools standard interfaces, OpenGeo Suite with GeoMesa allows developers to seamlessly transition from traditional to cloud computing architectures. GeoMesa simplifies harnessing the massively parallel computational abilities of Apache Hadoop to analyze and transform geospatial data. Architects and developers can now easily store, publish, query, analyze, and protect spatio-temporal data sets at scale, while exposing standards based interfaces for integration with existing and new applications.

Accumulo has seen rapid adoption by big data users who need to scale without being hampered by closed source data store options. US Federal agencies and many other enterprises are adopting Accumulo to address needs to process large amounts of data while strictly adhering to security and privacy regulations. Accumulo is an implementation of Google’s BigTable column family database built on top of the Hadoop ecosystem, providing fine-grained and highly customizable cell level security as well as a parallel programming model in the form of composable server side iterators that enables the spatio-temporal processing in GeoMesa.

“GeoMesa harnesses Accumulo to bring horizontal scalability and fine grained security to geospatial data management and analysis,’” notes James Conklin, Director of Operations at CCRi. “By bridging Accumulo and the Boundless OpenGeo Suite, GeoMesa enables organizations to realize the full value of their spatio-temporal data with a standards-compliant, open-source stack.”

This offering gives customers the best of open source, with greater access and control, scalability, customization and more. OpenGeo Suite is commercial open source software — built upon GeoServer, GeoWebCache, and OpenLayers — with the assurance of standards compliance, expert support, and advanced capabilities guaranteed by Boundless. GeoMesa is an open source spatial database extension for Apache Accumulo which is maintained and supported by CCRi. Additionally GeoMesa is being incubated within the open source minded Eclipse Foundation’s LocationTech Working Group, of which Boundless is a founding member.

“Customers increasingly need to better manage, analyze and act upon spatio-temporal big data, and our work with CCRi helps address these demands. Adding the horizontal scaling capabilities of GeoMesa to OpenGeo Suite allows users to scale deployments at manageable costs, and the backing of Boundless and CCRi ensures their systems are supported, up to date, and effective.” said Boundless CEO Eddie Pickle.

Combining the data management and publishing capabilities of OpenGeo Suite with the big data analytics capabilities of GeoMesa, this new solution will help enterprises solve spatio-temporal big data challenges. The product comes packaged with support and maintenance by Boundless and professional services from Boundless and CCRi and is being offered at an annual price of $65,000.

About CCRI

For over 20 years, CCRi has provided government and commercial customers with scalable, production-grade solutions to data-centric problems. We bring to bear the latest research in algorithms and data science, and render solutions in intuitive end-user software that our clients can apply immediately. CCRi’s team of systems engineers, data scientists, and software engineers applies decades of experience to each stage of data driven solution development- from basic research in data science to system implementation and support.

Born from the need to store and process vast quantities of spatial data on a cloud, CCRi developed GeoMesa to back its latest cloud-based analytics. CCRi has long leveraged the excellent tools provided by the open-source geospatial community and is excited to be contributing back with GeoMesa and the partnership with Boundless.
